Bio
Helena Colaço Salazar

Her academic career has always been linked to the arts. She studied Architecture up to the third year of her degree at Lusíada University; her concept of how to inhabit the city led her to lose interest in this discipline. At the same time, she began her journey into the art of acting, studying and working as an actress for eleven years in Lisbon, exploring the facets of various characters and discovering a little more about herself and about human nature.
In one of her most recent theatre performances, whilst developing her character, Kelly, from Gary Owen’s play *The Submerged World*, the words and message of the text began to take on such intensity that the best way to internalise the character was to express herself through drawing, compiling a series she called *Kelly’s Imaginary World*. This process marked another turning point in her career.
In 2011, he began two courses. One in New Painting Techniques at the National Society of Fine Arts, taught by the painter Paiva Raposo, and one in Photography at the Portuguese Institute of Photography, exploring the images she sees and feels rather than being an image herself.
Whilst still living in Lisbon, he undertook internships as a photojournalist at *Jornal Público* and *Jornal i*. He photographed architecture, live performances, vernissages, and photography and painting exhibitions.
Another turning point in his life came when he felt suffocated by city life and decided he had to leave in order to survive; in 2014, he moved further south, to live by the beach, where he stayed until 2017. In his search for peace and a connection with nature, he embarked on a nomadic lifestyle for five years, travelling through Portugal, Spain, France, Israel and Central America.
In 2023, he returned to the beachside, where he began work on his next solo painting exhibition, which was shown in 2025 at the Fábrica do Braço de Prata in Lisbon. Having participated in other group exhibitions.
In 2026, he is developing his next artistic creation, using the photo-watercolour technique, in an exercise in fusing photography and painting, which he has titled: Diluted Memories
